Patient safety cannot be achieved when nurses are not safe healthcare practitioners. Improving the well-being of nurses, improves the well-being of patients. There are many examples in health care settings where nurses’ safety directly affects patient safety. For example, poor staffing results in greater patient mortality, long shift increases nurses’ fatigue, stress among nurses increases risk of accidents and impairs work performance. For nurses to continue to be the key strand in promoting safe care for a healthy society, nurses need to be knowledgeable about system vulnerabilities as well as understand how up-to-date clinical knowledge and skills, as well as positive attitude promotes provision of higher quality of care for patients and the community.
